What Is Mohs Surgery?

What Is Mohs Surgery?

Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, affecting people from all over the country. Luckily, skin cancer is treatable and can often be removed entirely from the body if caught early. Using a technique called Mohs surgery, our dermatologists at The Dermatology Group in Longwood, Mount Dora, Orlando, and Winter Park, FL, can help you if you’re dealing with skin cancer.

What Is Mohs Surgery?

Mohs surgery is a procedure where our dermatologist removes cancer cells, while leaving as much surrounding healthy tissue as possible. During the surgery, our dermatologist removes any present cancer layer by layer. As each layer is removed, the tissue underneath will be thoroughly examined for signs of cancer.  Layers are removed in this way until no detectable cancer cells are left.

The technique enables our doctors to remove high-risk, locally invasive tumors while preserving unaffected tissue. It also provides more cosmetically pleasing results for our patients.

Lower Recurrence Rates Due To Precise Techniques

The precision of Mohs surgery allows the surgeon to remove suspect tissue, eliminating cancer without compromising healthy tissue.

The first step of Mohs surgery involves the application of local anesthesia and removal of a small section of the tumor. The tissue is then sliced and processed into slides to be examined through a microscope. If the analysis shows that there are still some cancer cells in the removed tissue, your surgeon will remove another thin piece of skin from the area where the cancer cells were found. This process is repeated until the cancer is completely gone.
