Our team of skin specialists at The Dermatology Group offers skincare to the communities of Longwood, Orlando, Winter Park, and Mount Dora, FL, including strategies for hyperpigmentation.
Understanding Hyperpigmentation and Its Causes
Hyperpigmentation is the usually harmless category of skin disorders where certain areas or patches of your skin begin to darken. It’s extremely common, and our team regularly helps patients who would prefer to act to reduce the appearance and the possibility of this discoloration.
Hyperpigmentation can occur almost anywhere on the body, often due to repeated sun exposure, but some of the other causes include:
- Genetics
- Pregnancy and/or hormonal changes
- Chronic diseases like diabetes
- Certain medications, including oral contraceptives and antibiotics
- Aging
- Skin injuries or inflammation
Treatment Approaches for Managing Hyperpigmentation
Our team at the Dermatology Group provides dermatological care in Longwood, Orlando, Winter Park, and Mount Dora, FL. For hyperpigmentation, depending on the outcome of your skin evaluation, we may recommend one or more of the following treatment approaches:
- Combination topical medication available over-the-counter and prescription in the form of a cream, gel, or emulsion applied directly to the skin to lighten the skin and/or reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation.
- Including certain vitamin supplements or foods in your diet
- Chemical peels are a cosmetic procedure to remove excess pigment and resurface the skin using a safe chemical solution. This is normally an in-office procedure.
- Microdermabrasion exfoliates the top layer of your skin, allowing topical ointments to absorb better and balance an uneven skin tone.
- Microneedling stimulates collagen production. It uses microscopic needles to puncture the skin, and as the punctures heal, they help create a more even skin tone.
- Laser therapy to reduce hyperpigmentation by breaking down the melanin in the skin.
Most skin spots are harmless, but we recommend dermatological care if your hyperpigmentation is multicolored or doesn’t respond to treatment. Your skin may need to be assessed and tested or biopsied for any underlying dermatological concerns.
The Importance of Dermatological Care
Hyperpigmentation is not fully preventable, but by making healthy skin choices, including regularly using sunscreen and consulting your dermatologist, you can manage hyperpigmentation and/or any cosmetic or medical skin concerns you may have.
